Halo Therapy equipment at MK Wellness Spa

Salt caves and salt mines have drawn people for easier breathing for generations, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, where the tradition is called speleotherapy. Halotherapy brings the same idea above ground: a halogenerator fills a room with tiny salt particles that you breathe in as you relax.

At MK Wellness, we use Clearlight’s HALO ONE in our infrared sauna. It turns a fresh, single-use cartridge of medical-grade saline into a fine salt mist that spreads evenly through the cabin, with particles small enough, about 1 to 10 microns, to travel deep into the airways.

You get two therapies in one session: the deep, comfortable warmth of the infrared sauna, and slow, easy breaths of salty air. Many clients find the combination especially soothing for the sinuses and chest.

The Science & Research

For the curious: how Halo Therapy works in the body, the studies behind it, and the areas researchers are exploring. Tap a topic to open it.

How it works in the body

Salt naturally draws in water. As Dr. Norman Edelman, senior scientific advisor to the American Lung Association, explains: "When fine salt particles are inhaled, they will fall on the airway linings and draw water into the airway, thinning the mucus and making it easier to raise, thus making people feel better." The HALO ONE makes those particles from medical-grade saline using vibrating-mesh technology, and the warmth of the infrared sauna invites slow, deep breathing.

Tiny salt particles (about 1 to 10 microns) are small enough to travel deep into the airways

Salt draws water into the airway lining, thinning mucus so it clears more easily

Infrared warmth relaxes the body and encourages slow, deep breathing

A calm, warm, quiet setting supports the relaxation response

Research & clinical evidence (3 studies)

Salt Rooms and Childhood Asthma

In a double-blind pilot trial in Israel, 55 children with mild asthma had 14 salt-room sessions over 7 weeks, with or without the halogenerator running (Pediatric Pulmonology, 2017).

  • ·Airway sensitivity (bronchial hyper-responsiveness) improved in the halogenerator group and stayed the same in the control group
  • ·Most quality-of-life scores improved
  • ·Standard lung function tests (spirometry) didn’t change

Salt Caves and Asthma

A Cochrane review of speleotherapy, the salt cave tradition of Central and Eastern Europe, found three trials in 124 children with asthma (Cochrane, 2001).

  • ·Two trials found short-term improvements in lung function
  • ·The reviewers called for larger, longer trials

Sauna Bathing and Pneumonia

A Finnish study followed 2,210 middle-aged men for a median of 25.6 years (Respiratory Medicine, 2017). These were traditional saunas, without salt.

  • ·Men who used a sauna 2 to 3 times a week had a 28% lower risk of pneumonia than men who went once a week or less, after accounting for other risk factors
