Concussion Awareness: What Every Athlete and Parent Should Know
This is not a concussion treatment guide. It's an overview of why proper medical evaluation and a supervised return-to-play protocol matter more than anything else after a head injury.
MK Wellness InsightsFounded by Danielle Cordova, Cypress, TXIf you suspect a concussion, in yourself, your child, or any athlete, the first and only immediate step is removal from play and evaluation by a qualified medical professional, the same day. This article is general educational information about concussions. It is not a treatment protocol, and nothing here is a substitute for emergency medical care or a physician's evaluation.
Why This Requires Immediate Medical Attention
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury, even when it looks mild from the outside. Symptoms don't always appear immediately, and returning to play before the brain has recovered carries a specific, serious risk called second-impact syndrome, a second injury sustained before the first has healed, which can be significantly more dangerous than the first injury alone. This is the single most important fact in this entire article: when in doubt, sit it out, and get evaluated.
Recognizing the Signs
Common signs include headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, difficulty concentrating, balance problems, and changes in mood or behavior. Symptoms can appear immediately or develop over the following hours. Any loss of consciousness, even briefly, requires emergency evaluation. When in doubt about whether a hit warrants evaluation, the answer is to seek evaluation.
Why Recovery Protocols Exist and Matter
Modern concussion management follows a supervised, gradual return-to-play protocol, typically moving through stages from complete rest to light activity to sport-specific training to full contact, only progressing when the athlete remains symptom-free at each stage, and only under the guidance of a physician or certified athletic trainer. Rushing this process, even with good intentions, is one of the most well-documented risk factors for prolonged recovery and reinjury.
What Generally Supports Recovery, Under Medical Guidance
Once a physician is managing the recovery and has cleared appropriate next steps, general wellness fundamentals, adequate sleep, proper nutrition and hydration, and a gradual, monitored return to cognitive and physical activity, support the recovery process the medical team is overseeing. This is standard, well-established guidance, not something specific to any product or service.
What Current Research Is Exploring
Concussion science is an active research area, and two lines of research come up often enough that they're worth understanding honestly, even though neither is settled science and neither changes the guidance above.
Hyperbaric oxygen. A 2013 randomized, controlled crossover trial published in PLOS One found meaningful cognitive and quality-of-life improvements in patients with persistent post-concussion syndrome one to five years after injury, using 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen at 1.5 ATA with 100% oxygen. It's a real trial with a real signal. But a 2024 literature review of the broader hyperbaric-and-brain-injury research field is titled, plainly, "Continued confusion in mild traumatic brain injury hyperbaric oxygen studies," because other trials in the same space have produced mixed or null results. Two things matter specifically for MK Wellness here: that trial's protocol used a higher-pressure, 100%-oxygen clinical chamber under research supervision, not the 1.3 ATA Mild Hyperbaric chamber we offer as a general wellness service, and the population studied was in the chronic phase of recovery, not the acute days or weeks after injury. Different pressure, different population, different setting. That's why we don't offer hyperbaric oxygen as a concussion protocol.
Molecular hydrogen. Animal studies have shown molecular hydrogen, the mechanism behind our Nano Vi sessions and DrinkHRW tablets, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that plausibly protect brain tissue after injury. In humans, the evidence for concussion specifically is a single published case report of one athlete drinking hydrogen-infused water after a sport-related mTBI, not a controlled trial. One case report, however encouraging, isn't evidence a wellness business should act on, and it's why we don't offer molecular hydrogen as a concussion recommendation either.
We're watching both of these research areas. Neither is ready to be part of concussion guidance, and we'll update this article if that changes.
Where MK Wellness Fits, and Where It Doesn't
To be direct: MK Wellness does not diagnose, treat, or manage concussions, and no modality we offer should be considered a concussion treatment. If an athlete is actively recovering from a concussion, their physician's or athletic trainer's return-to-play protocol governs everything, including whether and when any wellness activity is appropriate to resume. Our role, if any, is limited to supporting general wellness fundamentals like sleep and stress management once a medical provider has specifically cleared that as appropriate, never before, and never in place of their guidance.
If You Take One Thing From This Article
Any suspected concussion means immediate removal from play and same-day medical evaluation. Everything else is secondary to that.
MK Wellness services are non-medical and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition, including concussion or any other brain injury. This article is general educational information only and is not medical advice or a treatment protocol. If you suspect a concussion, seek immediate evaluation from a qualified medical professional. In an emergency, call 911.
