Ivermectin: The Nobel-Winning Antiparasitic, the Cancer Research, and What to Know

Ivermectin won its discoverers a Nobel Prize for fighting parasites, and today many people research it for cancer. Here's where it came from, what the lab and human studies show, the Texas law on buying it, and the safety facts that matter.

Ivermectin is one of the most important medicines of the last half-century. It has protected millions of people from parasitic diseases, and its discoverers won a Nobel Prize. Today, many people research it as a low-cost, repurposed option for cancer.

Here's where it came from, what the research shows, and what to know before you consider it.

At a glance

Research stageExperimental

Lab and animal studies plus personal stories; human trials still needed.

What it is

An inexpensive antiparasitic medicine with a long safety record at standard doses.

Why people choose it

As a repurposed option alongside cancer care, and for parasites.

What the research shows

Lab and animal studies show effects on many pathways cancer cells use; large human cancer trials haven't been done. In large trials for COVID, it didn't help.

Know first

In Texas, pharmacists can now dispense it without a prescription, but work with your doctor, never use animal products, and tell your oncology team.

Where to get it: In Texas, pharmacists can dispense it without a prescription (since December 4, 2025). It’s best used with a doctor.

What It Is

Ivermectin comes from a soil microbe discovered in Japan. Satoshi Ōmura and William C. Campbell won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for its discovery. It's used around the world against parasitic diseases like river blindness, elephantiasis, and scabies (Pharmacological Research, 2021).

In the U.S., ivermectin tablets are approved for certain parasitic infections, and it's also used in a lotion for head lice and a cream for rosacea. Using it for cancer is off-label.

Since December 4, 2025, Texas law has allowed pharmacists to dispense ivermectin without a prescription, making Texas the fifth state to do so.

How It's Thought to Work Against Cancer

In lab and animal studies, ivermectin has slowed the growth of several kinds of cancer cells, triggered programmed cell death, and affected multiple signaling pathways that cancer cells depend on (Pharmacological Research, 2021). Researchers describe it as a drug with real potential for cancer, which is why it's being studied as a repurposed option.

Why People Choose It

  • It's inexpensive and widely available, with decades of use against parasites.
  • It fits the repurposed-drug approach to cancer, which uses common, low-cost medicines that target pathways cancer relies on.
  • Patients and practitioners share many personal accounts of using it alongside treatment.
  • For parasites, where it's a standard, well-established medicine.

  • Parasites: it's one of the world's most important antiparasitic medicines, recognized with the 2015 Nobel Prize.
  • Cancer: the evidence so far comes from lab and animal studies. A 2025 review found no large randomized human trials yet, and noted reports of side effects in people self-treating (Current Oncology Reports, 2025).
  • COVID-19: two large randomized trials found no benefit. In Brazil, 14.7% of people on ivermectin and 16.3% on placebo were hospitalized or needed extended emergency care (New England Journal of Medicine, 2022). In the U.S., recovery took a median of 12 days on ivermectin and 13 on placebo, which the researchers didn't count as a real improvement (JAMA, 2022).

What to Know Before You Start

Know first

  • Work with a doctor, even without a prescription. Especially during cancer care, an integrative or oncology physician can check it against everything else you take.
  • Never use animal products. Products for horses and livestock are far more concentrated and aren't made for people.
  • Know the warning signs. In controlled studies, ivermectin was well tolerated even above approved doses. Rarely, serious nervous system effects like confusion, seizures, and coma have happened, mostly after too much was taken, and occasionally at standard doses in sensitive people (Journal of Applied Toxicology, 2026). Get help right away for confusion, unsteadiness, or seizures, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Check interactions. Bring every medicine and supplement to your pharmacist.
  • Keep it alongside treatment. Tell your oncology team, and never use it as a reason to delay or stop treatment.

We don't share doses or protocols. Your doctor sets those for you.

How to Find a Practitioner

Integrative oncologists and integrative or functional physicians are the people to ask. The Natural Health Network directory can help you find holistic practitioners near you.

Questions to ask

  • Have you used ivermectin with patients who have my kind of cancer? What have you seen?
  • How does it fit with my current treatment, and are there interactions?
  • What side effects should I watch for, and when should I call you?
  • How will we know if it's helping?

Common Questions

Is it the same as horse dewormer? It's the same active ingredient, but animal products are far more concentrated and made differently. Only use products made for people, as your doctor directs.

Can I buy it without a prescription in Texas? Yes. Since December 2025, Texas pharmacists can dispense it without a prescription. It's still wise to involve your doctor.

Does it cure cancer? No. People use it as one part of a broader plan alongside treatment, and large human trials haven't been done.
