Stubborn fat deposits — the fat that persists despite diet and training — are stubborn because they sit in areas with poor circulation and high density of fat cells that are metabolically resistant to conventional lipolysis. Cryo Sculpting addresses this at its root by exploiting cryolipolysis: the fact that fat cells are significantly more sensitive to cold temperatures than the surrounding tissue.
At the precise temperature delivered by cryogenic sculpting devices, fat cells undergo apoptosis (controlled cell death) while skin, nerve, and muscle tissue remain unharmed. Over the weeks following treatment, the immune system processes and eliminates these apoptotic fat cells — permanently removing them from the treatment area. Unlike fat cells reduced by caloric restriction (which shrink but remain), cryolysis-destroyed fat cells are gone permanently.

What a Session Feels Like
The cryotherapy applicator is placed on the target area and the cooling cycle begins. In the first few minutes, you feel intense cold followed by numbness as the fat layer cools. Most clients read, use their phone, or relax during the treatment. The EMS component (if selected) adds rhythmic muscle contractions to the numb, cooled tissue — which is typically well tolerated. Post-treatment, gentle massage of the treated area is performed to break up the temporarily crystallized fat cells.

How it works in the body
Cryolipolysis exploits the differential sensitivity of fat cells and non-fat tissue to cold temperatures. At approximately -5 to -10°C, fat cell triglycerides crystallize, triggering an inflammatory cascade that activates the apoptosis pathway. The adjacent skin, muscle, and nerve tissue — which require much lower temperatures to suffer damage — remains unaffected. Over 30–90 days post-treatment, macrophages in the immune system engulf and process the apoptotic fat cells, and they are eliminated via the lymphatic system.

A systematic review of 19 studies in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery looked at cryolipolysis (fat freezing) for body contouring (2015).
