The Autoimmune Support Toolkit: A Calm, Step-by-Step Guide
An autoimmune diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Our free Autoimmune Support Toolkit breaks it into 13 calm steps: the right tests, a team that listens, food and gut repair, hidden triggers, daily habits that calm the immune system, and a plan for flares. Save your progress, print your questions, or download the PDF.
MK Wellness InsightsFounded by Danielle Cordova, Cypress, TXAn autoimmune diagnosis can feel overwhelming: new words, new medicines, and a body that doesn't feel like yours. Or maybe you don't have a diagnosis yet, just symptoms that come and go and a stack of normal-looking labs.
Take a breath. Your immune system responds to its terrain: your gut, your food, your stress, your sleep, your home, and old infections or exposures. The terrain can change, and you can start with one step today.
We built the Autoimmune Support Toolkit to be a calm, step-by-step guide through it, with honest labels on how much research stands behind each idea.

How to Use It
- Choose where you are: just diagnosed or still searching, in a flare, or feeling steady. The toolkit shows you the first six steps to take.
- Tick each box as you go. Your checkmarks save on your phone or computer. No account needed.
- Bring your questions. Every question to ask is marked, and one tap prints them with room to write the answers, or emails them to you.
- Make the text bigger. Tap A+ at the top of the toolkit.
If You're Just Diagnosed or Still Searching, Start Here
- Start a simple symptom journal. Energy, pain, sleep, digestion, skin, and mood. Patterns are often the first clue.
- Ask which antibodies were tested and what they mean. A positive ANA alone isn't a diagnosis.
- Get tested for celiac disease before you go gluten-free. The blood test only works while you're still eating gluten.
- Ask for a full thyroid panel, including thyroid antibodies, not just TSH.
- Check key nutrients: vitamin D, B12, ferritin, magnesium, and zinc.
- Add a functional medicine practitioner who will look for root causes alongside your specialist.
The 13 Steps at a Glance
- Get organized. A symptom and trigger journal, photos of visible flares, your records in one place, and a helper at big appointments.
- Get the right tests. Antibodies, a full thyroid panel, celiac testing done the right way, nutrients, inflammation markers, and root-cause testing.
- Build your whole team. Your specialist at the center, with a functional practitioner, dietitian, biological dentist, counselor, and physical therapist around them.
- Calm inflammation with food. Cut sugar, seed oils, dyes, and ultra-processed foods; build plates around protein, vegetables, and fruit; try an elimination diet like the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), then reintroduce foods to find your triggers.
- Repair the gut. The functional medicine 5Rs, explained in our gut repair guide.
- Look for hidden triggers. Old infections like Epstein-Barr virus, mold, your mouth (a comprehensive biological dental exam), sleep apnea, hormones, medicines, and stress, past and present.
- Calm your immune system every day. Sleep, morning light, gentle movement, a daily calming practice, pacing, community, faith, and joy.
- When you flare. When to call your doctor, a flare plan written while you feel well, rest without guilt, and simple food.
- The integrative toolbox. What helps common symptoms, plus LDN, red light, PEMF, curcumin and omega-3s, and regenerative care, each with an evidence label.
- Choose wisely. Green flags, red flags, and why you should never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
- Your MK protocol. Gentle therapies for circulation, calm, sleep, and recovery, with what's worth knowing for your condition.
- Free help and resources. Helplines and directories for MS, arthritis, IBD, lupus, thyroid, celiac, and functional medicine.
- Voices we learn from. Dr. Terry Wahls, Dr. Amy Myers, Dr. Alessio Fasano, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, Izabella Wentz, and Dr. Mark Hyman, plus books to explore.
What the Research Shows
- Diet: In a small study of people with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, 11 of 15 reached clinical remission by week 6 on the Autoimmune Protocol alongside their usual care (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, 2017). In the WAVES trial, both the Wahls and Swank diets reduced fatigue and improved quality of life in people with MS (2021).
- Vitamin D: In the large VITAL trial, adults who took vitamin D for five years had 22% fewer new autoimmune diseases (BMJ, 2022).
- Infections: A study that followed 10 million US military members found Epstein-Barr virus infection raised the risk of MS 32-fold (Science, 2022).
- Fermented foods: In a Stanford study, healthy adults who ate more fermented foods for 10 weeks had a more diverse microbiome and lower levels of 19 inflammatory proteins (Cell, 2021).
- Movement: For rheumatoid arthritis, regular exercise is strongly recommended in the American College of Rheumatology's 2022 guideline, which also recommends a Mediterranean-style diet.
Our view: the terrain is everything. Your specialist manages the condition; a root-cause plan supports the body it lives in. Find your triggers, repair the gut, calm the nervous system, and give your immune system fewer reasons to be on high alert. You deserve a team that listens and options that respect your whole self.
Where MK Wellness Fits
We don't diagnose or treat autoimmune conditions. What we offer is gentle support for circulation, calm, sleep, and recovery, with therapies like PEMF, red light, mild hyperbaric oxygen, and our most restful options for flare days. We'll start gently and adjust as we learn what your body likes. See our Autoimmune Support protocol.
When you need something we don't offer, we connect you with people we trust. For medical questions and regenerative care, we refer our clients to Dr. Tina Hills, D.O., and her practice, PHMX, in Katy.
