EDTA Chelation Therapy: Heavy Metals, Heart Health, and What the TACT Trials Found

Chelation uses EDTA to pull heavy metals like lead out of the body. A large federal trial found it reduced heart events after a heart attack, especially in people with diabetes, and a follow-up trial did not. Here's the full story and the safety facts.

Chelation therapy uses a compound called EDTA, given by IV, to bind heavy metals like lead and carry them out of the body. Integrative physicians have offered it for decades, especially for heart health, and it's been tested in two large federally funded trials.

Here's what it is, why people choose it, what those trials found, and what to know first.

At a glance

Research stagePromising

Positive randomized or controlled human trials; still being confirmed.

What it is

IV infusions of EDTA, a compound that binds metals so the body can excrete them.

Why people choose it

To lower the body's burden of lead and other metals, linked to inflammation and heart disease.

What the research shows

A large trial found fewer heart events in people who'd had a heart attack, with the biggest benefit in people with diabetes. A follow-up trial in people with diabetes lowered blood lead by more than half but didn't reduce heart events.

Know first

Only a trained physician should give it, because the wrong form or rate can dangerously lower calcium.

Where to get it: Chelation-certified physicians, by IV.

What It Is

"Chelate" comes from the Greek word for claw: EDTA grabs metals and holds on, and the kidneys carry them out. A form called calcium disodium EDTA is a standard medical treatment for lead poisoning.

For more than 50 years, integrative physicians have also used EDTA chelation to support the heart and blood vessels, on the idea that lowering the body's metal burden helps calm the inflammation and oxidative stress that drive heart disease (JAMA, 2013).

Why People Choose It

  • Heavy metal burden: lead and cadmium build up over a lifetime, from old paint, water pipes, soil, and smoke.
  • Heart and blood vessel health, especially after a heart attack
  • Circulation, for cold hands and feet and poor blood flow
  • Many patients report feeling better, with more energy and clearer thinking

What the Research Shows

18%fewer heart events with chelation after a heart attack, in the TACT trial of 1,708 peopleJAMA, 2013
25% vs 38%heart events with chelation vs placebo, among people with diabetes in TACTCirculation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, 2014
62%drop in blood lead with chelation in the TACT2 trialJAMA, 2024
  • TACT (2013). In this NIH-funded, double-blind trial of 1,708 people aged 50 and older who'd had a heart attack, 26% of the chelation group had a major heart event, such as a heart attack, stroke, or procedure to open an artery, compared with 30% of the placebo group. It didn't change overall deaths (JAMA, 2013).
  • People with diabetes in TACT. Among the 633 participants with diabetes, heart events dropped to 25% from 38% (Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, 2014).
  • TACT2 (2024). To confirm that finding, a second trial enrolled 959 people with diabetes who'd had a heart attack. Chelation cut blood lead levels by more than half, but heart events were the same in both groups (JAMA, 2024). Researchers are still studying why the two trials differed.

What to Know Before You Start

Know first

  • Only with a trained physician. The wrong form of EDTA, or an infusion given too fast, can drop calcium dangerously. The CDC reported three deaths from low calcium linked to chelation between 2003 and 2005, and warned that one form of EDTA should never be given to children (MMWR, 2006).
  • It removes good minerals too, like zinc, so experienced physicians check labs and replenish minerals.
  • Kidneys: your kidneys carry the metals out, so your physician should check kidney function before and during treatment.
  • Get tested first. Blood, urine, or other testing can show whether metals are an issue for you.
  • Lower your exposure, too: filter your water, check older homes for lead paint, and see our non-toxic home guide.

We don't share doses or protocols. Your physician sets those for you.

How to Find a Practitioner

The American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) trains physicians in chelation and keeps a practitioner map that marks chelation-certified members. The Natural Health Network directory can also help you find holistic practitioners near you.

Questions to ask

  • Are you certified in chelation therapy, and how many patients have you treated?
  • Which form of EDTA do you use, and how do you protect my calcium?
  • What testing will we do before, during, and after?
  • How will you replace the minerals chelation removes?

Common Questions

Is chelation the same as a detox supplement? No. IV EDTA chelation is a medical treatment given by a physician. "Chelating" supplements and foods work much more gently.

Does chelation clear plaque from arteries? Practitioners have long believed it helps blood vessels. The TACT trials measured heart events, not plaque, and the results were mixed.

How long does a course take? In the TACT trials, people had 40 infusions over many months. Your physician will tailor it to you.
