EMS Explained: What Electromagnetic Muscle Stimulation Actually Does

A crunch contracts maybe 40 percent of your abdominal muscle fibers. EMS contracts closer to 100 percent, thousands of times, in 30 minutes. Here's how.

When you do a voluntary muscle contraction, a bicep curl, a crunch, a squat, your brain can only recruit a portion of the available muscle fibers at once. Even a highly trained athlete typically activates somewhere around 30 to 40 percent of a muscle's total fiber pool during a hard voluntary contraction. The rest stay in reserve.

Electromagnetic muscle stimulation bypasses that limit. It uses a focused electromagnetic field to directly stimulate the motor neurons that control a muscle group, triggering contractions that recruit closer to 100 percent of available fibers, far beyond what a voluntary contraction can reach.

What a Session Actually Feels Like

You lie down (or sit, for pelvic floor sessions) fully clothed. The applicator is positioned over the target muscle group and delivers a series of intense, involuntary contractions for the duration of the session, typically 30 minutes. It's not painful, but it is unmistakably intense: imagine the deepest, most exhausting set of that muscle group you've ever done, repeated continuously.

A single 30-minute session has been compared in research to the equivalent of thousands of maximal voluntary contractions, something that would be physically impossible to perform voluntarily in one sitting.

The Three Applications We Offer

EMS Body Contouring targets core, glute, arm, and thigh muscle groups for toning and strengthening, often paired with radiofrequency for simultaneous skin tightening.

EMS Face Contouring uses the same underlying technology at a lower intensity, targeting the muscles responsible for facial structure and jawline definition, combined with radiofrequency to support collagen production in the skin.

Pelvic Floor Strengthening uses a seated applicator to stimulate pelvic floor muscle contractions, fully clothed, for core stability and pelvic floor support.

Why Consistency Matters More Than Intensity

Because EMS produces such deep, supramaximal contractions, the muscle-building effect follows a similar adaptation curve to resistance training: it requires a course of sessions, not a single visit, and the sessions need to be spaced with enough frequency to build on each other without so much frequency that the muscle can't recover.

Our protocols are built around once-weekly sessions for the standard series, which lines up with published research on EMS muscle-building protocols for both face and body applications. Skipping weeks or spacing sessions too far apart tends to blunt the cumulative effect.

What EMS Doesn't Do

It's not a substitute for a resistance training program if your goal is general strength and conditioning, and it's not a weight-loss tool on its own. It's most effective as a targeted addition to an existing routine, or as an option for people who physically cannot perform voluntary resistance training in a specific area.
