How to Get the Most Out of Every Recovery Session

The therapy matters, but what you do in the 30 minutes before and after a session can make the difference between a good result and a great one.

We get asked some version of this question constantly: is there anything I should do differently to get more out of my sessions? The answer is yes, and most of it has nothing to do with the therapy itself.

Before Your Session

Hydrate ahead of time, not right before. Showing up well-hydrated matters more than chugging a bottle of water in the waiting room. This is especially true before HOCATT Ozone Sauna and Infrared Sauna, where well-hydrated tissue responds better to heat and oxidative therapies.

Eat something light beforehand. Arriving fasted before an intense session, especially EMS or EWOT, can leave you lightheaded. A small snack 60 to 90 minutes prior is usually enough.

Avoid stacking too much caffeine. A moderate amount is fine, but heavy caffeine intake right before a nervous-system-focused session like NeuroVizr or PEMF can work against the relaxation response you're there for.

During Your Session

Actually rest. For passive modalities like Red Light Therapy, Infrared Sauna, or HydroMassage, resist the urge to be on your phone the entire time. Letting your nervous system actually downshift is part of what makes these sessions effective.

Breathe intentionally during EWOT. The oxygen therapy component depends heavily on breath quality and consistency, not just showing up and pedaling.

After Your Session

Give your body 10 to 15 minutes before rushing out, particularly after Hyperbaric Oxygen, HOCATT, or EMS sessions. A short buffer lets your body settle before you're back behind the wheel or at a desk.

Hydrate again. This matters even more after heat-based and lymphatic-focused sessions, where fluid loss and mobilized waste products both need water to be cleared efficiently.

Sequence your sessions intentionally. If you're stacking multiple modalities in one visit, order matters. Our Synergy Protocol article covers this in depth, but as a general rule, circulation-boosting therapies like Infrared Sauna or Vibration Plate work well as primers before Red Light Therapy or PEMF.

Consistency Beats Intensity

The single biggest factor in results, more than any pre- or post-session habit, is simply showing up consistently. A protocol done two to three times a week for a month will outperform a single, perfect session almost every time. If you're unsure what frequency makes sense for your goals, that's exactly what our Therapy Matrix and membership consultations are built to figure out.
