Dr. Mark Hyman and the Case for Treating the System, Not the Symptom
One of functional medicine's most visible advocates argues that modern medicine is organized around the wrong question. Here's the case he makes for a different one.
MK Wellness InsightsFounded by Danielle Cordova, Cypress, TXDr. Mark Hyman, a physician and one of the most widely known public advocates for functional medicine, has spent much of his career making a specific institutional argument: that conventional medicine's organization by specialty and by named disease, a cardiologist for the heart, an endocrinologist for hormones, often obscures how interconnected these systems actually are.
The Core Critique
Hyman's argument is that the body doesn't organize itself into medical specialties. Inflammation, gut health, blood sugar regulation, and hormonal signaling all interact constantly, and a patient with symptoms spanning several of these systems can end up seeing multiple specialists, each addressing their own piece, without anyone looking at the whole picture connecting them.
The Functional Medicine Model
The functional medicine approach Hyman advocates for asks a different starting question than conventional care typically does: not "which disease matches this set of symptoms," but "which underlying systems are dysfunctional, and how are they connected." In practice, this usually means more extensive lab work, more attention to diet, sleep, stress, and environmental exposures, and treatment plans that address multiple systems simultaneously rather than sequentially.
Where His Work Concentrates
Hyman's public work has focused heavily on the relationship between blood sugar, insulin, and chronic disease (an area of significant overlap with Dr. Bikman's research), the role of food quality and specifically sugar and processed food in driving inflammation, and the gut microbiome's role in conditions that don't present as digestive issues on the surface.
Why It Resonates
Hyman's core critique, that siloed, symptom-focused specialty care can miss the connections between systems, is exactly why so many people seek out functional medicine after conventional care leaves them without answers. Like any field, practitioners vary, so it's worth finding one who explains their reasoning and tests with purpose. The Natural Health Network directory is a good place to start.
Where MK Wellness Fits
This systems-based thinking is the same framing behind our own Therapy Matrix: rather than picking a single modality to address a single symptom, we look at which underlying systems, inflammation, cellular energy, detoxification, the nervous system, are most likely driving what you're experiencing, and build a protocol that addresses more than one at a time.
