Chlorine dioxide is one of the most talked-about, and most debated, substances in holistic health. It's a powerful disinfectant used to clean drinking water, and it's sold online as "MMS" and "CDS" kits that people mix and drink.
You deserve the full story, told honestly: what it is, why people use it, what the research shows, and the facts that keep your family safe.
At a glance
Lab and animal studies plus personal stories; human trials still needed.
What it is
A powerful disinfectant used to treat drinking water and surfaces, sold online as “MMS” and “CDS” kits that people mix and drink.
Why people choose it
Supporters see it as a selective oxidizer that targets germs while sparing the body’s own cells, and many people share powerful personal stories of feeling better.
What the research shows
It’s a proven disinfectant, and chlorine dioxide mouthwashes reduce bad breath. There are no reliable human studies of drinking it to treat disease.
Know first
Drinking it has caused serious poisonings, including in children. Never give it to children, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for any exposure.
Where to get it: MMS and CDS kits are sold online but aren’t FDA-approved for any use in people. Chlorine dioxide mouthwashes are sold over the counter.
What It Is
Chlorine dioxide is a yellow-green gas that dissolves in water. It's an oxidizer, which means it pulls electrons away from other molecules. That makes it excellent at destroying bacteria, viruses, and odors, which is why it's used to treat drinking water, bleach paper, and disinfect surfaces.
It reached the holistic world through two products:
- MMS ("Miracle Mineral Solution"), promoted by Jim Humble, is a sodium chlorite solution that becomes chlorine dioxide when it's mixed with an acid activator.
- CDS ("chlorine dioxide solution"), promoted by Andreas Kalcker, is chlorine dioxide gas dissolved in water.
Why People Choose It
- A belief in selective oxidation. Advocates describe chlorine dioxide as targeting germs while sparing the body's own cells.
- Personal stories. Users share many accounts of feeling better from a wide range of conditions.
- Its long track record in water treatment, which supporters see as proof of safety.
- Distrust of the drug industry. Many supporters believe it's overlooked because it's inexpensive and can't be patented.
What the Research Shows
- As a disinfectant: chlorine dioxide reliably kills germs in water and on surfaces. That's its proven, everyday job.
- In the mouth: a 2023 review of 7 randomized trials found chlorine dioxide mouthwash improved bad breath after one day and one week, without known side effects (PLoS One, 2023). Mouthwash is spit out, not swallowed.
- Drinking it: it hasn't been tested in reliable clinical trials. The published reports are poisonings: a 9-year-old boy who accidentally drank undiluted MMS with his brother developed dangerous blood changes, kidney failure that needed dialysis, and destruction of red blood cells that needed a transfusion (American Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2021).
What to Know Before You Start
Know first
- Drinking it has caused serious harm. The FDA has received reports of severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, life-threatening low blood pressure, acute liver failure, hospitalizations, and deaths.
- Never give it to children, and never use it for autism. Children have been badly hurt.
- Store it locked up, out of children's reach.
- Know the emergency numbers. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for any exposure, and 911 for trouble breathing, confusion, or collapse.
- Mouthwash is different. Chlorine dioxide mouthwashes are made for the mouth, then spit out.
Other Ways to Get What People Are Looking For
Most people who look into chlorine dioxide want to fight germs and support their immune system. These support the same goals:
- For your mouth: a chlorine dioxide mouthwash for fresher breath, and a biological dentist exam if you have a health condition. See Are Root Canals Dangerous?
- For skin, eyes, and wounds: hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the same gentle germ-fighter your white blood cells make. See our HOCl guide.
- For the immune system: sleep, sunlight, real food, and a calm nervous system, the foundations of a strong terrain.
Common Questions
Is chlorine dioxide the same as bleach? No, they're different chemicals, though both are strong oxidizers. In MMS, sodium chlorite turns into chlorine dioxide when it's activated.
Isn't chlorine dioxide in tap water? Some water systems use it to disinfect drinking water, and only tiny traces remain. MMS and CDS products are far more concentrated.
Is CDS safer than MMS? Both deliver chlorine dioxide, so the same safety facts apply.
