Holistic Therapies Worth Researching: Chlorine Dioxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, Colloidal Silver, and DMSO
Some of the most talked-about holistic therapies rarely get a fair hearing. Here's what chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, and DMSO are, why people choose them, what the research shows, and what to know before you start.
MK Wellness InsightsFounded by Danielle Cordova, Cypress, TXHolistic health has always included therapies that the mainstream overlooks, and many of them have devoted followings among practitioners and the people they've helped. When you try to learn about them, though, you usually find either hype or dismissal, with very little in between.
This series is different. At MK Wellness, we believe people deserve to know about all of their options and to make their own choices. For each therapy, we share why people choose it, what the research shows, and what to know before you start. Browse the whole series in our Holistic Health, Both Sides guide, and see Part 2 for LDN, NAD+, chelation, coffee enemas, castor oil packs, and grounding.

Chlorine Dioxide
What it is. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful oxidizing compound. In small, regulated amounts it's used to purify municipal drinking water, and stabilized chlorine dioxide is found in some mouthwashes. In holistic circles, it's known as MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution) and CDS (chlorine dioxide solution).
Why people choose it. Advocates, including Jim Humble, who developed MMS, and Andreas Kalcker, who developed CDS, describe chlorine dioxide as a selective oxidizer that targets pathogens while sparing the body's own cells. Users share many personal accounts of improvement across a wide range of conditions, and supporters point to its long track record in water treatment. Many believe it's overlooked because it's inexpensive and can't be patented.
What the research shows. Its support comes mainly from the clinical and personal experience of its community of practitioners and users.
What to know before you start. The FDA has issued warnings against drinking chlorine dioxide, citing reports of severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and low blood pressure. If you're exploring it, work with a practitioner experienced in it, and never give it to children.
Hydrogen Peroxide
What it is. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is water with an extra oxygen atom, and your own immune cells produce it to fight germs. Holistic practitioners use it in several ways, including nebulizing a heavily diluted solution. Common household hydrogen peroxide is 3 percent, while "food-grade" is often 35 percent.
Why people choose it. Dr. Thomas Levy, a physician and author of books including Curing the Incurable, is its best-known advocate. He describes very dilute, nebulized hydrogen peroxide as a way to support the body's own defenses directly in the sinuses and airways, using a molecule the immune system already relies on. It's inexpensive, widely available, and many people report that it helped them through colds and respiratory illnesses.
What the research shows. The biology is well established, since your immune cells use hydrogen peroxide as an antimicrobial, and its use by nebulizer comes from clinical experience.
What to know before you start. Breathing it can irritate the airways, especially with asthma or lung conditions, so concentration matters. High-strength "food-grade" hydrogen peroxide is dangerous to drink and can cause serious internal injury. Work with a knowledgeable practitioner.
Colloidal Silver
What it is. Colloidal silver is tiny particles of silver suspended in liquid, used as a spray, nasal rinse, topical, or supplement. Silver was used against infection for centuries before antibiotics.
Why people choose it. Silver's antimicrobial power is real, and hospitals rely on it: silver-coated wound dressings, burn creams, and catheters are FDA-cleared precisely because silver kills bacteria on contact. Holistic users value it as a broad-spectrum natural antimicrobial, especially as antibiotic resistance grows, and many report good results, particularly with topical and nasal use.
What the research shows. Strong for silver in wound care and medical devices, with internal use supported mainly by users' experience.
What to know before you start. Long-term internal use can cause argyria, a permanent blue-gray skin discoloration. Silver can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics and thyroid medication. Quality and particle size vary widely between products.
DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide)
What it is. DMSO is a natural compound derived from wood pulp. It passes through skin easily and can carry other substances with it. It's used as a liquid, gel, or cream.
Why people choose it. DMSO has one of the longest research histories of any holistic therapy. Dr. Stanley Jacob at Oregon Health & Science University studied it for decades, and it has established medical uses: the FDA approved a prescription form for a bladder condition called interstitial cystitis, hospitals use it to protect stem cells during freezing for transplants, and it's widely used in veterinary medicine for inflammation. Users report relief from joint and muscle pain, sports injuries, and inflammation.
What the research shows. Studies of topical DMSO for pain and inflammation have been promising, and research interest has grown again in recent years.
What to know before you start. Because it carries substances through the skin, apply it only to clean skin and choose pure, pharmaceutical-grade products, not industrial grades. A garlic-like taste and breath odor is common. It can increase the effects of some medications.

Questions That Help When Researching Any Therapy
- Who is providing it, and what's their experience?
- How will I know if it's working for me?
- Does it interact with anything else I'm using?
- What quality or grade should I look for?
- Does everyone on my care team know?
