Hydrogen Peroxide: The Germ Fighter Your Airways Make, Why Functional Doctors Nebulize It, and Everyday Uses
Your airways make their own hydrogen peroxide to fight viruses, and respected functional doctors, including Dr. Thomas Levy, Dr. Joseph Mercola, and Dr. David Brownstein, use nebulized peroxide when a virus hits. Here's their reasoning, what the research shows, everyday uses, and the safety facts that matter.

Hydrogen peroxide is one of the simplest molecules there is: water with an extra oxygen atom. Your immune cells make it to destroy germs, and the lining of your airways makes it all day long as part of a built-in defense against viruses.
That's the thinking behind nebulized peroxide, which several respected functional doctors use when someone is fighting a cold, the flu, or another respiratory virus. Here's how your body uses peroxide, why these doctors turn to it, what the research shows, and what to know to stay safe.
At a glance
Early human data: small studies, case series, clinic data.
What it is
A simple molecule (H₂O₂) your immune cells and airways make to fight germs. It’s sold as 3% household peroxide and used in tooth whiteners, and some functional doctors use it as a very dilute mist in a nebulizer.
Why people choose it
Respected functional doctors, including Dr. Thomas Levy, Dr. Joseph Mercola, and Dr. David Brownstein, use nebulized peroxide to support the body when it’s fighting a respiratory virus, especially at the first sign of illness.
What the research shows
Your airways’ own peroxide defense inactivates flu viruses in lab studies. Doctors’ case series report fast recoveries, and at a hospital in Ghana, none of 7,736 patients using daily peroxide rinses caught COVID-19.
Know first
The strengths doctors use vary widely, so work with a practitioner who uses it, especially if you have asthma or lung disease. Never put peroxide in a CPAP or humidifier, and never drink “food-grade” 35% peroxide.
Where to get it: Some functional and integrative doctors guide patients in nebulizing peroxide; MK doesn’t offer it. The 3% bottle is sold at every pharmacy.
What It Is
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a mild oxidizer: it breaks down into water and oxygen, and that release of oxygen damages germs. You'll find it in disinfectants, contact lens cleaners, hair dyes, and tooth whitening products, and hospitals use it to sterilize instruments (Toxicological Reviews, 2004).
It comes in very different strengths:
- 3% (the brown bottle): for household cleaning and first aid
- Whitening products: small amounts in mouthrinses, gels, and strips
- 35% "food-grade": a concentrated industrial strength that's dangerous to swallow or handle without protection
How Your Body Uses It
Your body makes hydrogen peroxide on purpose. It's one of the main ways you were designed to fight germs:
- In your immune cells. When white blood cells meet a germ, they take in a burst of oxygen and turn it into superoxide and hydrogen peroxide to destroy it. Scientists call it the "respiratory burst" (Immunology Letters, 2017). People born without this ability have a serious immune deficiency.
- In your airways. The lining of your airways makes hydrogen peroxide with an enzyme called DUOX1. A partner enzyme in the airway fluid, lactoperoxidase, uses that peroxide to make hypothiocyanite, a natural compound that stops bacteria, fungi, and viruses (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2002).
- Against the flu. Mice without DUOX1 got sicker, died more often, and cleared the flu virus from their lungs more slowly. In human airway cells, the peroxide system inactivated several flu strains (PNAS, 2021).
- With iodine. When iodide took the place of thiocyanate, the same system inactivated RSV and adenovirus, two common respiratory viruses, in airway cell studies (American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, 2011). Some doctors, including Dr. Brownstein, combine peroxide and iodine.
Why Functional Doctors Nebulize It
A nebulizer turns liquid into a fine mist you breathe in. Doctors who use peroxide this way see it as supporting a defense your airways already rely on, delivered right where respiratory viruses first take hold: the nose, throat, and airways.
- Dr. Thomas Levy, board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology and author of Rapid Virus Recovery (2021), is its best-known advocate. In his view, nebulized peroxide started at the first sign of a cold or flu helps the body clear respiratory viruses quickly. He has published reports of patients who improved quickly, including people with COVID-19 in Colombia (Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, 2021).
- Dr. Joseph Mercola, an osteopathic physician, New York Times bestselling author, and founder of Mercola.com, has called it an inexpensive and simple way to help with most viral respiratory illnesses, especially when it's started soon after symptoms begin. He has interviewed both Dr. Levy and Dr. Brownstein about it.
- Dr. David Brownstein, a board-certified family physician and medical director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in Michigan, used nebulized peroxide with iodine, along with vitamins and other therapies, for his patients with COVID-19 in 2020, and published their results (below).
- Dr. David Jockers, a doctor of natural medicine known for his work in functional nutrition, stresses starting early, before an infection moves deeper into the lungs.
Their reasoning, in short:
- It follows the body's own design. Your airways already use peroxide to fight viruses.
- It works with your chemistry. Dr. Mercola explains that peroxide, iron, and vitamin C together form powerful oxidants that break germs apart, the same chemistry immune cells use.
- It goes where viruses start. The mist reaches the nose, sinuses, and airways directly.
- Timing matters. They stress starting at the very first sign, like a scratchy throat or runny nose.
- It's simple and inexpensive, and they pair it with nutrients like vitamins C and D.
What the Research Shows
- Dr. Brownstein's patients: of 107 patients diagnosed with COVID-19, most used nebulized peroxide with iodine, along with vitamins A, C, and D and iodine by mouth; some also received IV vitamin C, IV peroxide, or ozone injections. On average, they first felt better in 2.4 days and were completely better in 6.9 days. Three were hospitalized, and none died (Science, Public Health Policy & the Law, 2020).
- A Mexico City case series: 23 patients with COVID-19 and 28 caregivers, guided by telemedicine, used peroxide by nebulizer, as a mouthwash, and/or by mouth. Patients felt "completely better" in 9.5 days on average, and none of the caregivers reported catching COVID-19. Nausea, and sometimes vomiting, came from the version taken by mouth (Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2021).
- Rinses for the mouth, throat, and nose: at two hospitals in Ghana, staff gargled and used peroxide nose drops every day. At one of them, where inpatients also rinsed their mouths with it, 5 of 370 inpatients had COVID-19 in the month before the rinses began; afterward, none of 7,736 inpatients caught it, and no side effects were reported (Journal of Hospital Infection, 2022).
- The body's own defense: in lab and animal studies, the airway's peroxide system inactivates flu, RSV, and other viruses, and iodine makes it stronger against some of them (see How Your Body Uses It).
- What's next: these are observational studies, and patients often used several therapies at once. The Mexico City researchers called for randomized trials.
- Safety research: in a lab study on mouse windpipe tissue, even the weakest peroxide strength tested immediately slowed the cilia, the tiny hairs that sweep mucus and germs out of your airways. At that strength they recovered within 30 minutes; stronger solutions caused lasting damage and killed cilia cells. The tissue was bathed in liquid rather than mist, and the findings still need testing in living animals (PeerJ, 2023).
- Swallowing concentrated peroxide can release large amounts of oxygen gas into the blood, causing strokes, heart problems, and death (Toxicological Reviews, 2004). In 11 poison center cases of gas bubbles in the liver's veins, 10 came from 35% peroxide (Clinical Toxicology, 2010).
What to Know Before You Start
Know first
- Work with a practitioner who uses it. The strengths doctors recommend vary widely, so a practitioner's guidance on the product, strength, and timing matters. We don't share protocols.
- Take extra care with asthma, COPD, or another lung condition. Peroxide mist can trigger coughing, wheezing, or airway spasm. Talk with your doctor first.
- Never put peroxide in a CPAP machine or humidifier. A man who added it to his CPAP humidifier for a week developed lung inflammation (chemical pneumonitis) and needed hospital treatment (Cureus, 2023).
- For children, ask their doctor first.
- Never drink "food-grade" peroxide. Even a small swallow at 35% can release enough oxygen gas to block blood flow to the brain or heart.
- Store high strengths like a poison, clearly labeled and locked away from children, and keep peroxide away from your eyes.
- Know when to get help. Stop right away and call 911 for chest tightness, wheezing, or trouble breathing. For a swallow or a splash in the eyes, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Everyday Uses at Home
- Cleaning: 3% peroxide disinfects counters, cutting boards, and bathrooms, and brightens laundry. Test fabrics first, since it can bleach.
- Whitening: in a randomized trial of 45 people, a peroxide mouthrinse visibly whitened teeth after 60 days, with very little sensitivity and no gum irritation, and the results lasted 2 years (Journal of Dentistry, 2025). Choose a dental product made for whitening, and follow its directions.
- Ears: ask your doctor before using peroxide drops for earwax, especially if you've ever had an eardrum problem.
How to Find a Practitioner
Functional, integrative, and naturopathic doctors who use oxidative therapies can tell you whether nebulized peroxide fits your situation and guide you safely. The Natural Health Network directory can help you find holistic practitioners near you.
Questions to ask
- Is nebulized peroxide a good fit for me, with my lungs and health history?
- Which product and strength do you use, and why?
- What signs mean I should stop?
- When should I see a doctor in person instead?
- What else do you recommend to support my immune system while I'm sick?
Common Questions
Is it the same as the peroxide my body makes? It's the same molecule. Your airways make it in tiny amounts, right where it's needed, and control it tightly, which is why the doctors who nebulize it use dilute solutions.
Can I do this at MK? We don't offer nebulized peroxide or share protocols. For your airways, you can add halo therapy, a dry salt mist, to any infrared sauna session.
Is "food-grade" peroxide safer because it's pure? No. "Food-grade" means it has no stabilizer chemicals; it's also far stronger, and that strength is what makes it dangerous to swallow.
What about ozone or oxygen therapies? Those are different. See our guides to ozone therapy and mild hyperbaric oxygen.
How This Fits at MK Wellness
We support oxygen and your body's defenses with gentle, non-invasive therapies:
- Mild hyperbaric oxygen and EWOT increase the oxygen your tissues receive.
- HOCATT uses transdermal ozone, with your head outside the chamber.
- Halo therapy adds a dry salt mist to your infrared sauna session.
- Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl), another germ fighter your immune cells make, is gentle on skin, eyes, and wounds.
