Healthy Skin Starts Within: Dr. Ben Johnson and the Osmosis Approach
Your skin is a messenger for what's happening inside. Here's Dr. Ben Johnson's root-cause approach to skin in his own words, the Osmosis skincare and mineral makeup we carry, and how we support healthy skin from within.
MK Wellness InsightsFounded by Danielle Cordova, Cypress, TXMost skincare starts at the surface. We start underneath it.
Your skin is your largest organ, and it's constantly telling you what's happening inside: circulation, inflammation, stress, sleep, detox, and the products you put on it every day. When skin struggles, the most lasting results usually come from asking why.
That's why we love the work of Dr. Ben Johnson, founder of Osmosis Beauty. His approach is built on the same belief as The MK Way: support the body's own ability to heal, and go to the source.
Meet Dr. Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson, MD, is a physician, inventor, and entrepreneur who has spent 28 years working on some of the most challenging skin and health conditions. In 1997 he opened one of the first medi-spa chains in the country, then founded and formulated the Cosmedix skin care line.
In 2007 he founded Osmosis Beauty with what the company calls "a revolutionary approach that is changing the direction of skin care away from excessive exfoliation and renewing the focus on holistic skin strategies and detoxification." As his biography puts it, he "has found that the skin and body are capable of healing themselves with the proper tools and the removal of toxic influences."
We couldn't have said it better.
Dr. Ben's Big Ideas About Skin
Osmosis lays out Dr. Ben's thinking on its Science page. Here are the ideas that stand out most, in his words:
- Build collagen, don't injure it. "Collagen stimulation triggered by acids, lasers, and other trauma only serves to replace previously healthy collagen that has been damaged by the procedure." Instead, "collagen triggered by increasing nutrient delivery, circulation, and overall skin health will add to the dermal matrix creating lasting results."
- Uneven tone starts with inflammation. "Uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation) is always caused by inflammation in the skin so the best way to treat hyperpigmentation permanently is to treat the actual source."
- Choose your vitamin A carefully. Osmosis favors retinaldehyde (retinal), which it describes as "the only effective and sun-safe choice for your Vitamin A" because other retinoids cause more inflammation.
- Breakouts and redness often point inward. In Dr. Ben's view, acne is the skin purging toxins rather than a simple bacteria problem, and rosacea is often tied to digestion.
- Trust the body. "The ideal approach is to restore a youthful environment by feeding it key nutrients, eliminating the toxins and pathogens (and often emotions) that are interfering with healthy operations, and to trust it will heal and repair itself."
As Dr. Ben says: "By relentlessly asking 'why' and following the skin and research, I have discovered that our skin is capable of a near full recovery with a precisely targeted approach."
Reading Your Skin: The Skin Map
One of Osmosis's most interesting tools is Skin Mapping. In the company's words, "each facial zone represents an organ and the internal imbalances that often reveal themselves on the skin."
Their map connects, for example:
- Forehead to the large intestine
- Cheeks to the small intestine
- Under the eyes to the kidneys
- Eyelids to the adrenals
- Under the nose to the stomach
You can explore the full Osmosis Skin Map, or take their Skin Quiz for product suggestions matched to your skin.
Clean Ingredients Matter
What you put on your skin every day adds to your body's total load. Osmosis formulas are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates, and parabens, with no artificial colors or fragrances, and the company holds NSF/ANSI 455 GMP certification for how its products are made. Osmosis also offers an Ingredient Checker for the products already on your shelf.
For more on lowering your daily exposure, see The Non-Toxic Home.
Going through cancer treatment? Osmosis offers an Oncology Friendly collection, which it describes as gentle enough "for even the most sensitive, compromised skin." You'll find it in our Osmosis store.
Support Your Skin From Within at MK Wellness
Great skincare works best when the whole system underneath it is supported. These are the therapies our clients choose most for their skin:
- Red light therapy: red and near-infrared light, widely studied for skin quality and collagen. See how red light works.
- Infrared sauna: deep heat for circulation and a good sweat.
- Lymphatic roller and compression boots: support lymph flow and ease puffiness.
- Mild hyperbaric oxygen: more oxygen delivered to your tissues, for recovery and repair.
- EMS face contouring: muscle tone for a lifted look, without needles.
- NeuroVizr and PEMF: calm the nervous system, because stress shows up on your skin.
And the daily basics: protect your sleep (our sleep guide), get morning sunlight while never burning (sunlight, sunscreen, and sunglasses), and filter your water.
Our view: your skin is a messenger, not an enemy. Instead of stripping, burning, or covering what it's telling you, support the terrain underneath, choose clean products, and give your skin what it needs to repair itself. That's why Osmosis is the skincare line we carry.
Find Your Skin Protocol
For eczema, breakouts, redness, dark spots, fine lines, or sensitive skin during cancer treatment, our Skin Protocol Finder puts it all together: Osmosis skincare, Osmosis's inside-out protocol, the in-spa therapies that help, LifeWave patches when they fit, and a free PDF you can save. You can also describe your skin to our AI assistant for a plan built around you.
