NAD+: The Energy Molecule Behind Healthy Aging, IV Drips, and NR and NMN Supplements

NAD+ is a molecule every cell needs to make energy and repair itself, and levels fall with age. Here's why people choose NAD+ IVs and NR or NMN supplements, what the human studies show, and what to know before you start.

NAD+ is one of the most talked-about molecules in longevity. Every cell in your body needs it to turn food into energy and to repair itself, and levels decline as we age. That's why NAD+ IV drips and NAD+-boosting supplements have become a cornerstone of many longevity programs.

Here's what NAD+ does, why people choose it, what the research shows, and what to know first.

At a glance

Research stageEmerging

Early human data: small studies, case series, clinic data.

What it is

A molecule (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) found in every cell, essential for energy and repair.

Why people choose it

For energy, mental clarity, recovery, and healthy aging, through IV infusions or supplements like NR and NMN.

What the research shows

NR and NMN supplements reliably raise NAD+ levels in people and are well tolerated. Studies on how much they change energy, metabolism, and aging are mixed so far, and IV NAD+ hasn't been tested in outcome trials.

Know first

IV NAD+ should be given slowly by an experienced provider, and supplements are generally well tolerated.

Where to get it: IV infusions, or NR and NMN supplements. For IVs, we refer clients to Dr. Tina Hills, D.O., who sees clients under our roof.

What It Is

NAD+ helps the mitochondria, your cells' energy centers, turn food into usable energy (ATP). It also fuels enzymes involved in repairing DNA and in the "longevity" pathways switched on by fasting and calorie restriction (Nature Communications, 2018). NAD+ levels decline with age (Ageing Research Reviews, 2026), which is why researchers and longevity clinics are so interested in raising them.

There are two main ways people try to boost NAD+:

  • IV or injected NAD+, given in wellness and longevity clinics
  • Precursor supplements the body converts into NAD+, mainly nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN)

Why People Choose It

  • Energy: many people report more energy and stamina.
  • Mental clarity: sharper focus and less brain fog are common reasons.
  • Recovery and resilience, including during periods of high stress.
  • Healthy aging: NAD+ is a cornerstone of many longevity programs.

What the Research Shows

15randomized trials: NMN supplements were well toleratedNutrients, 2026
113studies reviewed in 2026: NAD+ boosters clearly work biologicallyAgeing Research Reviews, 2026
  • NR raises NAD+. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy middle-aged and older adults, 6 weeks of NR was well tolerated and raised NAD+ levels. The researchers also saw hints of lower blood pressure and less arterial stiffness worth testing further (Nature Communications, 2018).
  • NMN is well tolerated. A 2026 review of 15 randomized trials found NMN didn't increase side effects or liver enzymes. It didn't change weight, blood sugar, or cholesterol, though diastolic blood pressure dropped slightly (Nutrients, 2026).
  • The big picture. A 2026 review of 113 studies found that NAD+ boosters clearly work biologically: in animals, they often improved metabolism, mitochondria, and inflammation, and in people, NR and NMN raised NAD+ levels. Effects on how people feel and function were mixed, and no outcome trials have tested IV NAD+ itself for wellness or aging (Ageing Research Reviews, 2026).

What to Know Before You Start

Know first

  • IV NAD+: clinics report that infusing it too quickly can cause chest tightness, nausea, cramping, or flushing, so it's given slowly by an experienced provider. Ask how they monitor you.
  • Supplements: NR and NMN were well tolerated in trials. Choose third-party-tested brands.
  • Cancer: NAD+ fuels all fast-growing cells, so if you have cancer or a history of cancer, talk with your oncologist first.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there isn't enough research, so ask your provider.
  • Medicines: review everything you take with your doctor or pharmacist.

We don't share doses or protocols. Your provider sets those for you.

Supporting NAD+ the Natural Way

The same pathways NAD+ supports are switched on by everyday habits:

  • Move your body, including strength training and intervals
  • Give your body breaks from food, like an earlier dinner and no late-night snacking
  • Protect your sleep and morning light, which keep your body clock in rhythm
  • Go easy on alcohol, which uses up NAD+ as your body processes it

How to Find a Provider

For NAD+ IVs, we refer our clients to Dr. Tina Hills, D.O., and her practice, PHMX. Now she sees clients right under our roof, a few days a week, by appointment.

Elsewhere, NAD+ infusions are offered by integrative, functional, and longevity clinics. The Natural Health Network directory can help you find holistic practitioners near you.

Questions to ask

  • How fast do you infuse NAD+, and how do you monitor me during the drip?
  • Where does your NAD+ come from, and is it prepared by a licensed pharmacy?
  • Would an NR or NMN supplement make sense for me instead, or as well?
  • How will we know if it's helping?

Common Questions

Is IV NAD+ better than supplements? No head-to-head outcome trials exist. IV NAD+ reaches the blood directly; NR and NMN are proven to raise NAD+ levels and are easier and less expensive.

What's the difference between NR and NMN? Both are building blocks the body turns into NAD+. NR is a form of vitamin B3; NMN is one step closer to NAD+.

How soon would I notice anything? Some people feel more energy right after an infusion; others notice nothing. Trials of supplements ran weeks to months.
