Building an Elite Recovery Stack: Matching Modalities to Where You Are in Your Training Cycle

The right recovery modality on the wrong day can work against you. Elite programs plan recovery around the season the same way they plan training.

Serious training programs plan training in phases: building volume and intensity, backing off before competition, pushing harder in the off-season. Recovery deserves the same phase-specific thinking, and it rarely gets it. The modality that serves you well during a heavy training block isn't necessarily the right choice the week of competition.

Off-Season and Base Building

This is the phase for the highest tolerance to physiological stress, and the best window for addressing underlying issues that get triaged around during the season. Cryo Sculpting and Cold Plunge or Cryo Float can be used more liberally here without the same taper-timing concerns that apply closer to competition. It's also the ideal window for addressing structural work, Spinal Thermal Massage for postural and spinal issues, and for a full ShapeScale baseline scan to track body composition changes through the training year.

Build Phase, Rising Training Load

As volume and intensity climb, recovery modalities shift toward actively supporting adaptation rather than just managing soreness. EWOT to support the cardiovascular and mitochondrial adaptations training is driving. PEMF and Red Light Therapy stacked post-training to support tissue repair between sessions. Compression Therapy Boots become a higher-priority, more frequent tool as accumulated fatigue from training volume increases.

Peak and Taper, the Final Weeks Before Competition

This is where recovery modality choices need the most precision. The goal shifts from driving adaptation to arriving at competition fresh, without introducing new physiological stress the body hasn't adapted to. Be cautious about introducing new or aggressive modalities for the first time this close to competition, novel stressors are better tested during the build phase. Familiar, lower-stress recovery tools, NeuroVizr for nervous system regulation and sleep, gentle Vibration Plate, HydroMassage, take priority over anything more intense.

Competition Window

Pre-Game Prep protocols, light circulation and nervous-system-focused modalities, alongside proper nutrition and mental preparation. Post-Game Recovery protocols, cold therapy, compression, and light-based modalities, begin the recovery process as soon as possible after competition ends.

In-Season, Between Competitions

The ongoing challenge of in-season training is managing accumulated fatigue while still training and competing regularly. This is typically the phase with the heaviest and most consistent use of passive recovery modalities, Compression Boots, Infrared Sauna, PEMF, since there's limited room to back off training entirely without losing competitive sharpness.

Why This Structure Matters

Applying a heavy, taxing recovery protocol during peak training weeks can compound fatigue rather than resolve it. Applying only light, passive recovery during the off-season leaves adaptation opportunities on the table. Matching modality intensity and type to training phase is the same phase-by-phase planning that shapes the training itself, applied to the recovery side of the equation.

Building Your Own Stack

This is exactly what our Therapy Matrix and membership consultations are built to help with, matching modality selection and frequency to where an athlete actually is in their season, not applying a generic protocol year-round.
